SUMMARY:Monthly Seminar Series: Dr. Sriram Sankararaman - “Insights into the Evolutionary and Genetic Architecture of Human Complex Traits from Biobank-Scale Data”
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our upcoming Seminar Session! \n\n\n\nThis talk will explore how large-scale biobank data are transforming our understanding of the relationships between evolution\, genetics\, and complex traits across diverse populations. It will also highlight new insights into Neanderthal DNA contributions and reveal how gene-gene and gene-environment interactions play a significant role in shaping human traits beyond traditional additive models.

SUMMARY:Monthly Seminar Series: Dr. Chuchu Zhang - “Neural Mechanisms of Nausea”
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our upcoming Seminar Session! \n\n\n\nNausea is a protective but often debilitating sensation that limits the use of many important therapies\, and current anti-nausea drugs are frequently ineffective because the underlying brain mechanisms are poorly understood. Dr. Zhang will discuss the identification of specific neuron circuits in the brain’s area postrema that drive or suppress nausea in response to blood-borne signals\, revealing new targets and a circuit framework for better predicting and therapeutically controlling nausea.

SUMMARY:Making eggs and sperm in the lab: 21st century bioethics and the rise of new reproductive futures
DESCRIPTION:Organized by CRSHE Directors Hannah Landecker and Amander Clark\, CRSHE members Robbin Jeffries Hein and Isaias Roberson\, and French collaborators Anne Le Goff and Noémie Merleau-Ponty\, this workshop will explore the science and ethics of in vitro gametogenesis (IVG)\, that is\, the production of eggs and sperm from stem cells in the laboratory. Bringing together leading life and social scientists from six countries\, it will provide a unique interdisciplinary forum to address the challenges of anticipating IVG.   \n\n\n\nThis workshop is the result of an NIH-funded CRSHE interdisciplinary project on IVG. It is made possible by a grant from the Swiss Brocher Foundation.

SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series - Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this timely event where the science of human embryos and embryo models will be explained by preeminent scientist and author Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz. Opening remarks will be provided by CRSHE’s co-director\, Hannah Landecker. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, October 3\, 202412:00 p.m. PTReception to follow \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCalifornia NanoSystems Institute (CNSI)UCLA Campus \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP Now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is required.Seating is first come first served and is not guaranteed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the event: \n\n\n\nThe UCLA Center for Reproductive Science\, Health and Education (CRSHE)\, Broad Stem Cell Research Center (BSCRC) and Department of Molecular\, Cell and Developmental Biology (MCDB) are delighted to host Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz as our upcoming distinguished speaker. Zernicka-Goetz is the Bren Professor of Biology and Biological Engineering at Caltech and professor of mammalian development and stem cell biology at the University of Cambridge. Spanning the last 25 years\, her lab has made seminal contributions to the study of human embryos and is a pioneer in the field of stem cell-based embryo models. \n\n\n\nIn her talk\, Zernicka-Goetz will discuss how early mammalian development is characterized by a series of critical transitions that lay the foundation for a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby. To understand the scientific basis for this\, the Zernicka-Goetz laboratory develops innovative scientific technologies using stem cells to model the early human embryo. These models provide a system to study fundamental aspects of human embryo development and offer significant potential to improve outcomes for assisted reproduction\, elucidate the causes of early pregnancy failure and provide insights into the developmental origins of diseases. \n\n\n\nOpening remarks will be provided by Hannah Landecker\, professor in the UCLA Department of Sociology and the UCLA Institute for Society and Genetics. Professor Landecker uses the tools of history and social science to study contemporary developments in the life sciences and their historical taproots in the 20th century. \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by:
